Finding My Mentor

Finding my current and only Mentor was quite a strange process. After 2-3 years of trying Internet Marketing on my own and to be honest half-heartedly and not making any money, I decided to invest a mentoring programme. Like most I had bought some courses that give an overview of IM and some had good content, however there was no real support or steps follow, just a lot of information to take in with no real structure, so I got stuck, overwhelmed and lost focus.

I was signed up to a few IM mailing lists and one day I was contacted by an guy in the US who worked for one of the world’s leading Internet Marketers to inform me of a coaching and mentoring programme for $10,000 that included full training and mentoring for 12 months, with monthly 1 on 1 calls and a 1 week retreat staying with this Internet Marketer to work with him every day with 10 other people. Sounded great although I was a little sceptical as why a guy in US was contacting me about an EU based Marketer.

So I researched and checked this guy was actually affiliated with this Marketer and so on and all looked good. So I paid the deposit, but asked for an actual call with this Marketer before I paid the rest, just to be sure and put my mind at rest, as $10,000 is a lot of money. The call was going well, hearing stories of his successful students making $16,000 per month within a couple of months from their one on one calls and I was excited. “So when do we start with the one on one calls?” Then I was hit with my first bit of disappointment. This marketer had now decided that he wasn’t doing the 1 on 1 calls anymore and they were now part of a $25,000 course. Instead on the $10,000 course it was a 1 hour monthly call with up to 60 other people. So not exactly what I was originally told and not nearly as beneficially as a 1 on 1. So I wanted to time to think about it and look over the course materials to at least see what the course was like.

Second bit of disappointment – The course wasn’t even ready yet, I was then told a date it would all be ready by. So I waited and still no finished course. However there were some filmed seminars of other marketers to go through, which I decided to watch and I watched a guy called Lee McIntyre. It was one of his seminars and I really liked his teaching method and how he came across. As mentioned in a previous post, when watching some markters you’ll see people you like and people you don’t, for whatever ever reason they resonate with you or they dont. In Lee’s seminar this there was a point where he said he rarely gives recommendations on other marketers, unless they are excellent and a name he mentioned was John Thornhill.

So I found Lee’s contact details on the Internet and contacted him with a number of questions about being a newbie and getting started and once again John Thornhill was mentioned. So I did my research on John and found nothing but good feedback on him, his products and his courses. I contacted John to ask about his mentoring and coaching programmes and as fate would have it, this was just as he was starting a new programme call ‘The Partnership to Success’, then BOOM !!! I signed up with John. I’ve started and am currently 6 weeks in to my 12 month course with John and I love it, great course with great teaching and structured steps to follow, with a great community of people all working towards a similar goal and all helping each other to get there, exactly what I was looking for :-).

Interesting story Dominic, JT was recommended to me too by a UK marketer who I have been following since I started out in 2005. I think UK marketers are generally more down to earth without all the hype and inflated egos that seem to come with those from the US. During WIS 2005, I bought a mentoring course from one of the presenters there and it turned out to be a complete waste of time and money, costing around 2,000 pounds if I remember correctly. One of the problems was being in a completely different time zone and all the so called ‘coaching’ was done by webinar with little substance combines with a poor quality webinar platform. A lot of pontificating without any substance and certainly no step by step method. This is what I like with the P2S program, which assumes we know nothing and takes us step by step…I’m also in week 6…let’s keep in touch and progress together:-)

    Hi Dominic,

as you I had my ups and downs for some time in Internet Marketing and decided to go for having a mentor; it was just as John launched his Partnership to Success coaching.

As I knew John from a couple of other products and loved the way how he is teaching things it was a no brainer to join.

I am very confident we made the right decision and will take it from here.

    Cheers

    Hi Dominic,

Wow, it seems like a lot of us are in similar situations joining John Thornhill’s excellent P2S Program. I too was referred to John by a UK marketer and have previously spent numerous amounts on various coaching courses.

I see that you are keeping up with training, and your blog is looking great.

Keep up the excellent work and I look forward to following your progress

I also had a lot of ups and down, invested in couching programs, especially to cleared blockages and create thriving business but very often it turned out to be just scam. Sometimes they had 30 – 60 days guarantee and asking them to refund my money back there was no answer. It is clear to see something important – lie and dishonesty won’t last too long.
